However, during the celebration of the Chinese New Year Mass, not only the ancestral rites are done by the Chinese Family Associations, but colorful Chinese ethnic dances are performed during mass offerings.

In 2002, a formidable but visionary lady, in the person of Mrs. Fanny Lao Uy, president of theIloilo Multi-Sectoral Business Organization, Inc. invited the then newly installed Chief Executive of the City of Iloilo, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas to attend the Chinese New Year Mass at the Santa Maria Parish, to show the City Mayor how the Ilonggo Chinoys celebrate the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year.

Mrs. Uy saw this celebration as a venue for introducing the Chinese culture to the Ilonggo community. She was so inspired by the way fellow Chinoys celebrate the coming of the Lunar New Year, that she saw this to be an opportunity to strengthen the ties between the Chinoys and their brother Ilonggos.

With the help of the Sta. Maria Parish priest, Fr. Manuel Uy, SJ, Mrs. Fanny Uy, and two local prominent Chinoy business organizations, the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo, Inc. (FCCCII) and the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Panay, Inc. (FFCCCPI), the Hon. Jerry P. Treñas, initiated a city-wide celebration of the Chinese New Year making it the very first celebration of its kind outside Metro Manila. He created an ad hoc task force which was later named as Task Force Chinese New Year. The Honorable Mayor wrote a letter of invitation on January 16, 2003, requesting the FCCCII, FFCCCPI, the Filipino-Chinese community, and the Chinese-Filipino schools to help in the first Chinese New Year Celebration of the City of Iloilo. It was also during this momentous affair that the City Government would publicly recognize the efforts of Chinoy organizations and Chinoy Ilonggos who have made contributions to make Iloilo City better and more culturally attractive.

<imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">
Iznart Street of Iloilo City was chosen as the first venue of the celebration because it is where one will find most of the stores of the Chinoy retail businessmen. This street is known to the “locals” as Chinatown, just like Ongpin Street in Manila. Thus, Iznart was spruced up, decorations were put up, and all the stores cooperated by hanging authentic Chinese lanterns to signify and welcome the lunar year celebration.

In 2003, three schools participated in the program. These were the Iloilo Central Commercial High School, Iloilo Sun Yat Sen High School, and the Santa Maria Catholic School, now known as Ateneo de Iloilo Santa Maria Catholic School. To lend a more festive atmosphere, the Task Force invited the Iloilo Hotel, Restaurants & Resorts Association (IHRRA), an organization affiliated with IMSBOI to complete the celebration with a Chinese Food Festival. A variety of authentic Chinese cuisine was offered, so that one can buy and/or eat tikoy, sio pao, sio mai, oh chian, oh ke, chay taw ke, kim kuy ke, lo mi, ma mi, lum pia, ma chang, kiam pheng and also savor the hot and spicy makee. And to the delight of the Ilonggos, the celebration ended with a fantastic fireworks display, which is a traditional way of welcoming the lunar new year.

Because the 2003 celebration seemed to have attained a degree of success, Mayor Jerry Treñas again initiated a similar celebration by calling the Task Force Chinese New Year to convene in preparation for the coming of the Year of the Monkey in 2004.

It was in 2005, however, when Mayor Jerry Treñas thought of expanding the Task Force Chinese New Year into a formal association, still with the FCCCII, FFCCCPI and IMSBOI as pioneer members. The organization was called the Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Association (ICFCA). The president of FFCCCPI then was Mr. Henry Chusuey who became its first chairman; while the president of FCCCII, Mr. Felipe Uygongco, became the first Vice Chairman. All Chinoy Family Associations were also requested to participate.

The task of providing cultural presentations was, however, given both to FCCCII and FFCCCPI. This decision came about because both organizations manage and own two prominent educational institutions in the City of Iloilo. FCCCII is the founder of the Iloilo Central Commercial High School, and FFCCCPI is the founder of Iloilo Sun Yat Sen High School.

It was also decided that both organizations shall host and anchor the annual celebration alternately.

<imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">
In the succeeding years, the Chinese New Year celebrations were greatly anticipated by everyone. As the Ilonggos await the Kasadyahan and Dinagyang Festivals, Chinoys and Pinoys also await with similar degrees of excitement the colorful surprises of the Chinese New Year.

It is very heartwarming to remember that throughout the years of the celebrations of the lunar new year, from 2006 up to the present, world class pyrotechnics displays being sponsored through the years by SM City Iloilo, and “live bands” playing up to the wee hours of the morning, gave a fitting culmination to the cultural presentations.

Likewise, it is noteworthy to mention that in 2007, Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, also introduced “Bacolaodiat”, a similar celebration of the Chinese New Year in their City.

From a vision of one dynamic businesswoman was born a cultural event that is now considered as one of the major tourist attractions in the City of Iloilo. The Chinese New Year is an event that celebrates the cultural diversity of the Chinese Ilonggos; and even without the aid of a “Chinese astrologer,” both Chinoys and Pinoys believe that “the celebration of the Lunar New Year, ‘Chun Chiat,’ or Spring Festival in the City of Iloilo is here to stay.” Its magnitude and color may vary from year to year, but the celebration will be one that every Ilonggo will look forward to. Moreover, its underlying message of peace and happiness for family members, friends, and the community will definitely continue, because this celebration is beyond politics, religion, family or business association, or racial roots.

The Iloilo Chinese New Year is a grand celebration for everyone!
This is the reason why Jaro is considered by many as the religious capital of Western Visayas. This is also the time when some Jareños especially abroad would come home and celebrate the feast with their family.

This year's Fiesta Queen is Ray Paulette Antonia-Solinap, and will be crowned in glittering ceremonies at the Jaro Plaza gymnasium – a fiesta tradition that has been carried out for generations.

The Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral, is the site of the miraculous image of Virgin Mary, which was canonically crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1982. It is the only religious image in the Philippines to have personally crowned by a Pope.

The church is built in 1864 with fossil stones of creamy color compared to most of the Hispanic structures in Iloilo that were built over bricks and sandstones. Its baroque architecture features designs of entwining of many neoclassic features. Stained glass windows of Romanesque designs contribute to unique balance between baroque and classic style. The dominance of baroque style is seen through the small rose window at the upper half of the church's facade, which is typical to gothic churches.

The Jaro church plays a big part in the history of Iloilo. It is considered as the heart of Catholicism in the island and perhaps the most important shrine in the region.

Jaro, one of the six districts of Iloilo City, originally name was Salog or Saro, was the center of religious and economic power in the Visayas during the Spanish rule of the Philippines. It has been one of the more economically-advanced areas of Iloilo City even during the Spanish occupation of the Philippines and probably the richest town of the entire colony (1521-1898).

Historical artifacts indicate that the town had once conducted trade with China and Siam (Thailand) due to its port along the navigable river that ran through the town.

Jaro became a city in 1886 until it was later absorbed by the city of Iloilo along with the neighboring towns of Molo, Mandurriao, La Paz and Arevalo in the early 20th century when all economic activities were shifted to the port of Iloilo.ReymundBFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06246313956367978421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4156050948182180901.post-18235506821771958052011-01-25T22:09:00.006+08:002011-01-26T09:55:23.306+08:00Tribu Pan-ay is Dinagyang 2011 Champion; Pantat Festival bags Kasadyahan crownFort San Pedro National High School's Tribu Pan-ay is this year's Dinagyang Ati tribe competition Champion.
The 12 films available for viewing are "Halaw," "Red Shoes," "Lola," "Emir," "Donor," "Enkuentro," "Bakal Boys," "Kano," "Astig" and "Himpapawid (Manila Skies)".

“Yanggaw” by Richard Somes is the sole Ilonggo feature included in the film fest.

Santos said the Film Development Council came to be through Republic Act 9167, which seeks to set and establish a national film archive made by Filipino filmmakers and to develop and promote locally produced films that meet international standards.

The country's premier actors among them are Coco Martin in "Astig" (directed by Giuseppe Bede Sampedro) and Rosanna Roces in "Lola" (helmed by premier director Brillante Mendoza).

On the other hand, Mabilog said that the selection of Iloilo City to host the film festival is a manifestation of national filmmakers' awareness that culture and movies are alive in Iloilo.

Iloilo has several independent filmmakers and directors of. Among these are lawyer Joenar Pueblo, Oskie Nava, Kevin Piamonte and the late Quin Baterna.

Mabilog said he is happy to note that the University of the Philippines Visayas has recently been producing short indie films in the local dialect Hiligaynon to showcase the moral values, tradition and culture of the Ilonggos.

The UPV indie film producers are also expected to showcase their works during the Dinagyang Festival.ReymundBFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06246313956367978421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4156050948182180901.post-80840737275198868382010-12-23T03:21:00.002+08:002010-12-23T03:24:19.344+08:00Spend christmas in Iloilo

It's the best time of the year to meet old friends and to visit colorful and well-lighted parks and plazas with carefully designed light adornments for the celebration of Christmas. Experience Iloilo brings you some of the best places to visit this Christmas all over Iloilo.

In Iloilo City, the City Government of Iloilo launched 'A fair in December' last November 19, 2010 which highlighted the switching-on of Christmas lights in all of the public plazas in each city-district. The major thoroughfares of the city are at the same time adorned with lanterns sponsored by various business firms in Iloilo City.

The Iloilo Provincial Government at the same time decorated the Iloilo Provincial Capitol with elegant lights and Christmas adornments.

The two most popular areas in the City of Iloilo are the Angelicum School and the Central Philippine University, both in Jaro district.

In Central Iloilo, the town of Pototan is the most visited in the region during Christmas season because of its spectacular Christmas designs and lights exhibits. Dubbed as the Christmas Capital of the Visayas, Pototan is celebrating its yearly Iwag festival which starts on December 16 each year. This makes the Municipality of Pototan to be one of the favorite places to visit, every December, in Western Visayas.

Other popular destinations in central Iloilo also include the light exhibits in the municipalities of Cabatuan and Janiuay while in the southern part of Iloilo is the Municipality of Guimbal.
Going up north is the "Adopt and Light a Tree" project of the Municipality of Balasan which already runs for more than a decade. Balasan is the popular Christmas destination among the Northern Towns of Iloilo and other neighboring places in Capiz. This year, an added attraction is made; a giant Christmas tree competition among its 24 barangays was revived after almost 11 years since it was first initiated. The 'Adopt and Light a tree' is now being participated by government agencies and business sector in the said municipality.ReymundBFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06246313956367978421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4156050948182180901.post-89261335474332200962010-12-23T02:21:00.001+08:002010-12-23T02:21:46.309+08:00Environment, cultural themes to highlight Kasadyahan 2011

Tangke is located in South Gigantes Island (Isla Gigantes Sur) in the northernmost town of Iloilo Province - the Municipality of Carles. The jump-off point to South Gigantes Island is the Estancia seaport complex. From there, tourists can hire a motorized boat (motor bangka) to go to South Gigantes Island/Tangke. Travel time is approximately an hour.

<imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">

However, for those tourists who want to experience the relaxing accommodations in Carles, they can take the other route by dropping by to the nearby town of Balasan and take a 45-minute ride to Barosbos, Carles. Barangay Barosbos (Carles) is a resort strip in the municipality with a good number of resorts that are lined-up along the highway facing the beachfront to give you an overnight accommodation, before you finally jump off to Gigantes Island. One can make an arrangement with the resort owner to bring them to the island. Approximate travel time is 1 and a half hour.
The only one of its kind.” Catchphrases coined by the writer in describing this unique festival started in 1991 by then Pavia municipal councilor and later 2nd District Board Member Cecilia H. Capadosa.

The term TIGKARALAG is a “karay-a” or local dialect word that loosely translates to season/time (TIG) of soul/s (KALAG) and refers to the observance of the All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days that fall on the 1st and 2nd days of November respectively.
It originally started on the evening of the 31st of October but was later moved to the evening of the 30th of the month to give the participants and audiences alike the time to give due respect and observance of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day that immediately follow the original date.

<imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">

Its humble beginnings consisted of group of children dressed and made up as otherworldly characters and creatures performing in the Pavia municipal plaza to the delight of the hometown audience. The group who has the most impressive presentation then wins packs of candies and corn snacks.

<imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">

Today, the participating groups represent a specific barangay of the town and are mostly composed of teenagers. They compete in a dance-drama with a storyline reflective of the TIGKARALAG. The choreography, music, costumes and makeup now are not only designed to scare and impress but are purposely done to help convey the message – that death is inevitable and good always triumph over evil. The most creative performers win a big cash prize and the honor of being proclaimed the year’s champion.

<imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></imageanchor="1">

Early this October 2010, European tourists got the chance to tour Iloilo City and province during their visit Saturday after their cruise ship docked at the Iloilo International Seaport, in Loboc, La Paz district, the City Information Office said.

The cruise ship MS Hanseatic carried some 100 European tourists, the second to arrive in the city this year. MS Columbus was the first one to arrive last March.

MS Hanseatic is a five-star cruise ship owned by the Hapag-Lloyd shipping line in Germany. It is the only five-star expedition-cruise ship worldwide.
The visit of European tourists was a welcome development for the city’s tourism and investment promotion which is one of the priorities of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

City Tourism Officer Benito Jimena said tourists find Iloilo City “one of the safest destinations in the country.”

The group toured the city and visited some churches in the city province such as the world-renowned Miagao Church and San Joaquin Church in the first district.
Teresa was born in Pototan, Iloilo on Oct. 13, 1868. She studied at the Colegio de San Jose in Jaro, Iloilo; in 1885, and was sent to Manila and enrolled at Colegio de Santa Rosa and then at Colegio de Santa Catalina. She was a classmate of Doña Aurora Aragon, the wife of President Manuel Quezon. Teresa finally obtained a teacher's certificate from the Colegio de Dona Cecilia in 1894, and had taught in several schools in the province of Panay.

When she married Alejandro Baldero, a rich landowner from Sara, Iloilo, she gave up her teaching career to work on the farm. While on the farm, she learned the rough ways of farm life, learning how to ride a horse and fire a pistol. By then however, the Philippine revolution had started and two of her brothers had become officers in the revolutionary army.

She joined the revolutionary forces at the age of 28. In the battlefield, she bravely led men soldiers. Her unit won the battle of Sap-ong near Sara, Iloilo. The commander of the Revolutionary foces in the Visayas, General Martin Teofilo Delgado, commended her bravery and military abilities and entrusted her leadership in many military encounters throughout Panay island. Nay Isa fought the Americans in the Battle of Iloilo City on Feb. 11, 1899.

After the fall of the Filipinos' regional headquarters in Sta. Barbara, Magbanua shifted to guerrilla tactics. In 1900, she disbanded her unit and surrendered.

Nay Isa remained childless and was widowed shortly after the outbreak of the war with the Japanese. Teresa sold all her property in Iloilo to help finance the guerrilla forces. She migrated to Mindanao and lived with her sister, Maria, in Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur. Here she would die in August 1947 at the age of 78, with the rare distinction of having fought all of her country's colonizers.ReymundBFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06246313956367978421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4156050948182180901.post-10185921872573519172010-10-12T23:50:00.005+08:002010-10-13T17:45:00.423+08:00Dr. Laureta cited for his book on Panay seashells
